Tanzania Gets Solar-Powered Mobile Classrooms That Equips Youths With Vital Digital Skills

Vodacom and Huawei have joined forces to launch the DigiTruck, a mobile classroom designed to bring digital education to remote communities in Tanzania. The innovative project is part of the broader DigiTruck initiative, which aims to bridge the digital divide and provide access to technology and education in underserved areas.

The DigiTruck is a solar-powered mobile school built from a recycled shipping container. Equipped with laptops, smartphones, and a reliable 4G internet connection, it offers a unique learning experience for those who have limited or no access to digital resources.

Many Tanzanians, especially those living in rural areas, have never experienced the internet or even heard of it. The DigiTruck aims to change this by bringing digital education directly to their doorstep. By providing access to technology and digital skills training, the project is empowering individuals and communities to participate more fully in the digital economy.

The DigiTruck initiative has been ongoing since 2014, with Close the Gap partnering with multiple technology companies to build six DigiTrucks across four African countries: Kenya, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Tanzania. Huawei’s DigiTruck is the seventh truck to join the project.

The DigiTruck’s curriculum covers a wide range of digital skills, including computer literacy, internet usage, and digital entrepreneurship. By equipping students with these skills, the project is helping to create opportunities for economic growth and social development in remote communities.

The DigiTruck is particularly focused on reaching underserved areas, such as rural villages and marginalized communities. By bringing education directly to these areas, the project is breaking down barriers and providing access to opportunities that were previously out of reach.

The launch of the DigiTruck in Tanzania marks a significant milestone in the project’s expansion. As the DigiTruck continues to travel across the country, it is expected to reach thousands of people and make a lasting impact on the lives of those it serves.

Vodacom and Huawei’s partnership on the DigiTruck project demonstrates their commitment to social responsibility and their belief in the power of technology to transform lives. By providing access to education and digital skills, the DigiTruck is helping to build a more inclusive and equitable future for Tanzania.
