Support Keepod Unite initiative to bring Computers to the slums of Mathare, Kenya

Keepod Unite is trying to raise $38,000 to bring personal computers to the slums of Mathare in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. This initiative is the brainchild of Keepod, an Israeli startup and LiveInSlums, an NGO.

Keepod technology offers a simple solution to provide personal computing for all by separating the software from the hardware. Keepod OS is a secure operating system that runs from any USB drive eliminating dependency on one physical computer.

Instead of needing to manufacture new computers, Keepod enables the reuse of millions of computers that are thrown away each year through its innovative technology.

Through Keepod, the desktop experience can be customized, content, such as education kits, can be installed and updates can be deployed quickly even in areas where there is no internet connectivity.
The team is using the Indiegogo platform to raise these funds to distribute 1,500 Keepod devices, a secure operating system that runs from a USB drive, and a total of 50 recycled PCs in Mathare, as well as open community computer hubs. As at the time of this report, it has raised about $6000 and has until February 14 to raise the total sum.

5 Billion people, 70% of the world’s population are still without access to personal computing. This problem exists in every city and country around the world. Unless concerted efforts are taken to bridge the digital divide, many developing countries and communities will miss economic opportunities. We started the Keepod Unite Project to bridge the digital divide by giving people the means and skills they need to use technology.
