Starlink Resumes Service in Nigeria After Regulatory Pause

After months of regulatory delays, Starlink service in Nigeria is officially back. Following major infrastructure upgrades and regulatory approval, Elon Musk’s SpaceX satellite internet company has resumed customer activations nationwide. This long-awaited return marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward reliable connectivity and widespread digital inclusion.

    What Caused the Pause?

In November 2024, Starlink suspended new residential internet kit activations across Nigeria. At the time, users attempting to place orders on the company’s website encountered a message indicating that services were temporarily halted pending approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Because of this regulatory pause, prospective customers were unable to complete the activation process—which involves ordering, receiving, and installing Starlink’s hardware, connecting to its low-Earth orbit satellite network, and setting up a satellite dish for service.

    What’s Changed?

Now, after successfully expanding its network capacity, Starlink has lifted the suspension and resumed activations throughout the country. Sources familiar with the company’s operations say infrastructure improvements made to boost bandwidth and enhance overall service stability—especially in underserved rural communities and densely populated urban areas—enabled this development.

In a statement shared with Saturday PUNCH, Starlink’s Nigerian operator described the relaunch as “a significant stride toward bridging the digital divide and revolutionizing connectivity across the nation.” The service is currently active again in major cities such as Lagos and Abuja, with expansion efforts already underway in other high-demand areas nationwide.

    Konga and the Retail Rollout

Konga, Starlink’s largest authorized retail partner in Nigeria, expressed enthusiasm about the relaunch and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a seamless customer experience.

“To make access even easier, we’re offering free nationwide delivery,” the e-commerce giant announced. “Whether customers order online or visit one of our retail outlets in Asaba, Warri, Uyo, Kano, Onitsha, or Ibadan, their Starlink kits will be delivered at no additional cost.”

This strategic move not only simplifies the onboarding process for new users but also extends service reach into more remote and underserved communities across the country.

    A Game-Changer for Connectivity

Far more than a technical update, the return of Starlink service in Nigeria represents a transformative shift in how people across the nation access the internet. In regions where traditional broadband infrastructure remains inconsistent or completely absent, satellite internet offers a fast, reliable, and scalable solution.

The recent infrastructure upgrades are set to unlock higher speeds, greater reliability, and significantly improved performance—especially in areas that previously experienced congestion or lacked adequate service.

This development couldn’t be timelier. With digital demand accelerating due to trends like remote work, online learning, video streaming, and e-commerce, Starlink’s renewed availability offers a modern alternative for individuals, households, and businesses looking for consistent, high-quality internet access.

The return of Starlink service in Nigeria is more than a comeback—it’s a powerful leap forward for the country’s digital transformation goals. Whether in the heart of Lagos or the edges of rural Nigeria, millions now have a better shot at joining the digital economy. For tech inclusion, national progress, and the everyday Nigerian user, this marks a win that promises long-lasting impact.
