Teraco, the largest provider of data centres and connectivity platforms in Africa, has announced the completion of the first phase of JB4, a hyperscale data centre extension at its Bredell Campus in Ekurhuleni, to meet the rising demand for data centre capacity from corporations and cloud providers.
According to Teraco CEO Jan Hnizdo, JB4’s safe and reliable colocation services are in keeping with the company’s long-term goal of facilitating digital transformation across Africa.
JB4 is a key component of Platform Teraco because it provides businesses and cloud service providers with a flexible environment in which to roll out their IT infrastructure without compromising on speed, dependability, safety, or breadth of available connections.
The first stage of JB4 features a building footprint of 30,000 square metres, 8,000 square metres of data hall area, and a critical power load of 19 megawatts (MW).
Teraco has also acquired land and power in close proximity for the Phase 2 extension, which will increase the facility’s critical power load to 50 MW.
This new data centre significantly increases the capacity of Platform Teraco in South Africa. Hnizdo explains that “Platform Teraco, with its numerous industrial ecosystems and open interconnection marketplace, is a crucial aspect of the modern enterprise’s digital transformation strategy.”
According to him, “JB4 is perfect for the distributed interconnection-defined architecture of the modern enterprise since it is connected to all the other Teraco data centres through the facility’s wide ecosystem of network operators.”
The approximately 20-kilometer-away Teraco Isando Campus communication hub (JB1/JB3) is accessible by a number of fibre optic lines. It was constructed to meet the needs of hyperscale companies around the world as well as international compliance standards, and it will be an asset to the current certified data centre portfolio.
“The majority of enterprise organisations are accelerating their digital transformation strategies and placing a greater focus on cloud adoption strategies. Enterprises are looking for the ability to scale as network strategies evolve, and in a world where fast and secure interconnection with strategic business partners is a priority, this is a source of competitive advantage.”
Companies who want to speed up their digital transformation utilise Teraco to dynamically grow their IT infrastructure, adopt hybrid multi-cloud architectures, and establish connections with critical business partners from the Platform Teraco community of global and local users.
According to Hnizdo, the rising need for cloud services in Africa has resulted in significant growth for the company. This demand has led to an increase in hyperscale requirements.
With the addition of JB4, Teraco’s critical power load capacity across its various data centres increases to 126 MW, with 40 MW available at the Isando Campus (JB1/JB3), 64 MW available at the Bredell Campus (JB2/JB4), 21 MW available at the Cape Town Campus (CT1/CT2), and 1 MW available at the Durban data centre.
