The Invigilator, a South African education technology company specializing in secure remote assessment solutions, has successfully raised US$11 million (approximately R195 million) in a strategic funding round aimed at propelling its international growth and enhancing its AI-driven capabilities.

The investment round was led by Kaltroco, a private, family-backed investment firm headquartered in Jersey, Channel Islands. Kaltroco was joined by a network of seasoned investment professionals based in Nashville, Zurich, and Cape Town, reflecting a broad international interest in The Invigilator’s mission and technology.

In a statement, The Invigilator highlighted Kaltroco’s unique investment approach:

As a single, family-backed investment company with no external investors and no constraints on investment structure or holding period, Kaltroco offers the flexibility to align with the long-term goals of its portfolio companies and their leadership teams.

Kaltroco has made approximately 30 investments globally, supporting innovative ventures across various sectors.

The Invigilator plans to deploy the newly acquired capital to:

    • Advance its proprietary AI models, focusing on real-time monitoring and assessment integrity.
    • Introduce multilingual support, making the platform more accessible to diverse global audiences.
    • Expand operational teams in key international markets.
    • Strengthen partnerships with educational institutions and corporate clients across North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Co-founder and CEO Nicholas Riemer expressed pride in the company’s journey and its growing global footprint:

We always knew we were building something special. It’s incredibly rewarding to see South African technology gaining international recognition and driving innovation in education.

The Invigilator, founded in 2020, was created to address challenges in academic integrity, particularly in resource-constrained environments. Its platform enables secure, cost-effective exam monitoring and has already been adopted by over 100 educational institutions, including Varsity College, Regenesys Business School, Curro Academy Schools, Eduvos, and Boston City Campus.

Earlier this year, the company launched a groundbreaking AI detection feature that helps educators identify when students have used AI tools to complete assignments. This feature analyzes individual responses, builds a unique writing profile for each student, and flags inconsistencies that may indicate over-reliance on AI, helping educators preserve critical thinking and academic integrity.

“This investment allows us to accelerate the development of our live AI monitoring technology,” Riemer added. “We’re moving toward continuous assessment monitoring powered by AI, which will expand access to education while maintaining credibility in evaluation.”

With this strategic funding, The Invigilator aims to solidify its position as a global leader in secure, AI-powered remote assessment solutions. The company also remains committed to championing African innovation on the world stage, showcasing how homegrown technology can solve global challenges in education.
