Sony reveals the $700 Playstation 5 Pro with GPU upgrade, advanced ray tracing, AI upscaling

Sony has announced the next in the evolution of console experience, the Playstation 5 Pro. According to Hideaki Nisino, CEO, Platform Business Group, Sony Interactive Entertainment in a press release, “we developed PS5 Pro with deeply engaged players and game creators in mind – as many have asked for a console that runs even higher fidelity graphics with smoother frame rates at 60FPS.”

Some of the key performance features are:

    • Upgraded GPU: With the PS5 Pro, the GPU has been enhanced, with the addition of 67% more Compute Units compared to the standard PS5 and delivering 28% faster memory speeds. These upgrades allow for up to 45% faster rendering, resulting in a smoother and more responsive gameplay experience..
    • Advanced Ray Tracing: More powerful ray tracing has been added, providing more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
    • AI-Driven Upscaling: Sony is also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.

Additional upgrades for the PS5 Pro include Game Boost, which enhances the performance of over 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games that can be played on the PS5 Pro. This feature helps stabilize and improve frame rates and graphics for both PS4 and PS5 titles. Select PS4 games also benefit from Enhanced Image Quality, offering improved resolution. The PS5 Pro will also feature cutting-edge wireless connectivity with Wi-Fi 7 support in regions where it’s available. Additionally, it will support VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and enable gaming in 8K resolution for compatible displays.

Check out the video below to hear Mark Cerny, lead architect for PS5 Pro, discuss the key innovations from PS5 Pro.

The PS5 Pro seamlessly integrates into the PS5 product lineup and is fully compatible with existing PS5 accessories, including the PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, and the Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore headsets. The user interface and network services will remain unchanged from the PS5, ensuring a consistent experience across the entire platform.

The PS5 Pro console will be available at $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR. It will include a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller and a copy of Astro’s Playroom pre-installed in every PS5 Pro purchase. PS5 Pro is available as a disc-less console, with the option to purchase the currently available Disc Drive for PS5 separately.

The Playstation 5 Pro will launch on November 7, 2024 and will be available at participating retailers and directly from PlayStation at direct.playstation.com. Preorders will begin on September 26, 2024.
