Some weeks ago, I was buying household stuffs at the mall when my attention was directed to the milk section when I saw for the first time the new lid for FireslandCampina’s Peak full cream unsweetened evaporated milk.
I picked one. Flipped it over severally. I ran my right-hand index finger gently across the surface of the lid, I also navigated the edges with my left thumb. I was quiet for a moment and when I finally turned to my brother, he took his eyes away from the tin of milk I just dropped in my shopping cart. In unison we nodded thrice. Even though we didn’t really say anything audible, we knew we were both thinking about the same – the problems solved by Peak milk’s new lid.
Let me take you away from the new lid for a moment. Let’s journey back to about 5 years ago when I was in Owerri a major town in southeastern Nigeria. I just got after a tiring day going from one electronic store to another at the popular Douglas Market in search of the original Apple earphones. I was too tired to cook and remembering that I had biscuits somewhere in the house, I decided to make Lipton tea with Peak milk.
Understandably, I couldn’t use the milk in the tin at once. I forgot to seal the bored hole properly which was the reason why there were man insects already dead in the milk tin.
Maybe Peak milk manufacturers had similar testimonies and decide to re-innovate to solve what seemed to be a familiar problem.
The new lid does several things including preventing insect infestation, makes the milk last longer and preserved. It also eliminates the need for an opener.
This is why I’m singling this new lid out – even with its extra cost compared to other tin types. Peak milk is reportedly 60-years old but this is the first time it would have a convincing answer to the problem of how to keep milk without tearing the label, rubbing on your tongue and ‘gluing’ it to the punctured hole.
It is not rocket science. It is not complex. It is a simple innovative solution with far-reaching impacts than the manufacturers can ever imagine.
