Social media app usage is on a steady decline as internet users abandon these apps for WhatsApp, Facebook messenger, and WeChat according to a study by web analytics company SimilarWeb.
The study tracked hundreds of anonymous internet users from nine countries including UK, France, Germany, Spain, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, USA, and India from January to March 2016 and compared with the same period in 2015, showed a drop in the use of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. They found that Instagram was the most affected as its global usage nosedived by 23.7%, twitter-23.4%, Snapchat 15.7%, and Facebook nosedived by 8%.
Furthermore, Facebook retained its position as the most popular social media as people spend an average of 34 minutes on its app every day while Instagram came next with users spending an average of 17 minutes daily.
Meanwhile, there has been a significant rise in the use and installation of instant messaging apps like Facebook Messenger, Viber, WeChat, and Viber. Whatsapp use in the UK is 27.5 minutes per session, second only to its parent app Facebook in popularity, and is installed on 54% of all Android phones.
