Snap, the company behind Snapchat, has just launched a camera drone called Pixy. Snap says it is your friendly flying camera; a pocket-sized, free-flying sidekick that’s a fit for adventures big and small.
Most people only know Snap for Snapchat, a multimedia instant messaging app and service even though Snap refers to itself as a camera company. It believes that “reinventing the camera represents our greatest opportunity to improve the way people live and communicate.”
Pixy is a yellow drone that takes off and lands on your palm. It flies in four preset flight paths – Pixy can float, orbit, and follow wherever you lead, without a controller or any set-up.
Pixy Tech Specs
- Pixy weighs 101g Including battery and measures 131.7mm x 106mm x 17.6mm.
- Each rechargeable battery allows you to capture content for 5-8 flights, depending on the flight mode(s) selected. Rechargeable batteries can be swapped for easy use. Remove your Pixy battery and pop in a fully charged one to keep flying
- Images – Standard: 4000 x 3000 (12MP)
- The replaceable rechargeable lithium-ion battery fully recharges in about 40 minutes. You can get 80% quick charge in about 20 minutes
- The Pixy has a 16 GB flash storage and it stores up to 100 videos or 1000 photos
- It is compatible with the iPhone 7 or later running iOS 14 or above and select Android phones running 8.0 or above.
According to Snap, “Pixy is a companion to Snapchat. Videos from flights are wirelessly transferred and saved into Snapchat Memories. From there, use Snapchat’s editing tools, Lenses, and Sounds to customize what you capture. With a few taps, you can automatically crop into portrait and apply quick Smart Edits, like Hyperspeed, Bounce, Orbit 3D and Jump Cut. Then, share to Chat, Stories, Spotlight, or any other platform.”
This is the second hardware of note that Snap is launching after Spectacles, the sunglasses, in 2016
Pixy is available for purchase today in the United States and France while supplies last for $229.99.
