I am sure Moxie Marlinspike, CEO of Signal could not have predicted the surge in new users as people are leaving WhatsApp in droves due its anticipated change in its privacy policy.
Good as it may, the company is trying to cope with this increase but it suffered a global outage some hours ago. Signal provides a platform for secure and encrypted video, voice, and text communication, but when the outage occurred, users were not able to send messages.
Just last week the company reported a sudden increase in demand after larger rival WhatsApp updated its Privacy Terms and Conditions which integrates data with Facebook platform starting February 8.
Tech mogul Elon Musk contributed to its growth by tweeting in favour of the company, telling people to “use Signal”.
During the outage, Signal tweeted that it has been adding new servers and extra capacity at a record pace every single day this week nonstop, but today exceeded even our most optimistic projections.
In response to Signal’s tweet, SpaceX and Tesla Inc. founder Elon Musk wrote, “Your server-side code is doing too much.”
The company is working to bring additional capacity online to handle peak traffic levels
