Should Nigeria have been present at the 2015 Mobile World Congress? #MWC15

The 20th edition of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona has come and gone. The Mobile World Congress is the world’s largest annual gathering of mobile and related industry C-Level executives. If anything is happening in mobile, it can be found at MWC. This year’s event took place from the 2nd to 5th March 2015 and it had a record-breaking 93,000+ attendees from 200 countries. Over 2,100 companies showcased their organizations’ products and services.

While a lot of companies used this opportunity to showcase their products and services, countries were not left out. Some of the countries present there included Turkey, Israel, Mexico, Austria, Spain….

Two companies represented Nigeria – Vas2Nets and Terragon Group. However one wonders whether Nigeria, being the most populous country in Africa, shouldn’t have been present there. From the number of visitors to the two Nigerian booths, this is something that should be considered. The Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, was present briefly in Barcelona and it would have been a big boost if she led a delegation of Nigerian companies to the event.

The Mobile World Congress creates great networking opportunities for Nigerian companies, presents the country as a very good place to do business and a country with lot of opportunities. Investors want to come to Nigeria but know little or nothing about this giant of Africa.

Considering the importance of mobile technology to the growth of Nigeria and the growing number of mobile subscribers, I believe Nigeria should consider being present at the next edition coming up between th2 22nd and 25th of February 2016.
