Vodacom Group has launched an ambitious initiative to bridge the digital skills gap in Africa. Through partnerships with technology giants such as AWS, Microsoft, and Skillsoft, Vodacom aims to empower young people across eight African countries with critical digital competencies. The Vodacom Digital Skills Hub is designed to train 1 million youth by 2027, contributing to a future-ready, inclusive digital economy.
Addressing Africa’s Digital Skills Shortage
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) estimates that by 2030, over 230 million jobs in Africa will require digital skills. Yet, the continent struggles with a significant supply-demand gap in digital expertise. Vodacom’s Digital Skills Hub directly addresses this challenge, offering self-paced training to individuals aged 18-35. This initiative aligns with Vodacom’s broader mission to harness technology for societal inclusion and sustainable development.
“The African continent faces challenges like unemployment, gender inequality, and limited access to essential services. Our Digital Skills Hub exemplifies our commitment to fostering a more inclusive Africa,” says Shameel Joosub, Vodacom Group CEO.
Expanding Digital Learning Across Africa
The Digital Skills Hub operates in South Africa, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Lesotho, Egypt, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Kenya. Leveraging existing e-learning platforms such as Talimy in Egypt, VodaEduc in the DRC, and e-Fahamu in Tanzania, the initiative ensures that even underserved and remote areas can access high-quality educational resources. These platforms provide tailored training, addressing diverse learning needs.
AWS Educate is one of the flagship programs offered through the Digital Skills Hub. This comprehensive program introduces beginners to cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. By prioritizing practical, engaging, and accessible training, the initiative not only addresses the digital skills gap but also inspires young Africans to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Building Africa’s Digital Economy
Africa is home to over 400 million young people aged 15-35, making it the youngest continent globally. This demographic represents immense potential for driving economic growth and innovation. “Digital is the new currency,” Joosub emphasizes, highlighting the importance of equipping young Africans with the skills to thrive in a technology-driven world.
The Vodacom Digital Skills Hub is more than just a training platform; it’s a gateway to career opportunities in emerging tech fields. By nurturing a pipeline of digital talent, Vodacom aims to catalyze the continent’s transformation into a competitive player in the global digital economy.
A Vision for an Inclusive Future
This initiative reflects Vodacom’s long-term vision of using technology to connect people for a better future. Beyond skills training, it represents a commitment to reducing inequalities and fostering empowerment through digital inclusion.
Matimba Mbungela, Vodacom’s Chief Human Resources Officer, notes, “We aim to inspire the next wave of digital innovators and advance Africa’s digital future by addressing the skills shortage and nurturing young talent.”
