September 19: Day Twitter starts the rollout of #longertweets

There has been many announcements that Twitter will extend its 140-character limit by not counting some types of content. The first announcement was in January this year, but it didn’t happen. The rumour came up again in May and died down. It didn’t happen.

And we have been waiting……Will #longertweets finally happen?

Finally, I hope, The Verge reports that d-day is September 19. I hope the report is true. If true, this means that Media attachments (images, GIFs, videos, polls) and quoted tweets will no longer count towards the 140-character limit.

The report also states that usernames will no longer count when they’re at the beginning of replies.

“It’s unclear whether all of these changes will occur simultaneously; certain content types may gradually stop counting against the character limit in stages. But the company will at least kick off the move next Monday.”

In August last year, Twitter eliminated the 140-character limit from its direct message feature, which allows users to communicate privately with each other. The limit on direct messages rose from 140 to 10,000 characters.
