Samsung Electronics has disclosed plans to integrate advanced artificial intelligence (AI) software into its Galaxy smartphones starting early next year. This includes the incorporation of a tool within the Galaxy AI suite that facilitates real-time translation of call conversations in various languages.
While Samsung hasn’t provided extensive details, it hints that these changes could potentially reshape the user experience on its smartphones significantly. The suite of AI tools, named Galaxy AI, is set to launch in the early months of the upcoming year, according to a statement from Samsung. The company emphasises that despite the widespread focus on AI, some of its most significant benefits are yet to materialise in the realm of mobile technology.
Samsung aims to address this gap, asserting that Galaxy AI will deliver a comprehensive mobile AI experience. The tools within this suite leverage both on-device AI developed by Samsung and cloud-based AI through collaborative partnerships with industry leaders.
Among the forthcoming AI tools, Samsung highlights the inclusion of a universal call translator, reminiscent of concepts found in science fiction, such as Douglas Adams’ Babel Fish from “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”
Specifically, the “AI Live Translate Call” feature is anticipated to offer users a personal translator seamlessly integrated into the native call feature. Samsung envisions a scenario where audio and text translations appear in real-time during conversations, simplifying communication across different languages without the need for third-party applications.
Samsung underscores the on-device nature of these features, emphasising the assurance that private conversations remain confined to the user’s phone. The company anticipates that the introduction of Galaxy AI will contribute to breaking down common barriers to social connection, making communication more straightforward and productive.
However, specifics about the number of supported languages and compatibility with existing smartphones remain undisclosed. Additionally, it is unclear whether these AI features will extend to current models or exclusively debut in upcoming, yet-to-be-announced devices. Samsung is expected to unveil its latest flagship devices, the Galaxy S24 series phones, early in the upcoming year.
