South Korea’s Samsung Electronics announced on Tuesday the untimely passing of its co-CEO, Han Jong-hee, at the age of 63. Han suffered a heart attack, which led to his sudden demise, leaving a significant void in the company’s leadership. Han Jong-hee was a pivotal figure at Samsung, overseeing the digital appliances division and the device experience unit, which encompasses both mobile phones and home appliances.
His extensive career at Samsung began in 1988, and over the years, he ascended through various roles, demonstrating remarkable leadership and innovation. In 2011, he became the head of the product research and development team within the visual display division, where he played a crucial role in advancing the company’s technology and product offerings. His contributions culminated in his appointment as co-CEO in 2022, a position that underscored his influence within the organization.
In a heartfelt statement, Samsung credited Han with instrumental contributions that helped establish the company as a global leader in the television market. His strategic vision and dedication were vital in navigating the company through challenging business landscapes, fostering growth and innovation during turbulent times.
Samsung expressed its condolences, stating, “Our deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.” Han was one of four executive directors on Samsung’s board and had recently hosted the company’s annual general shareholders meeting in Suwon, South Korea, just a week prior to his passing. During this meeting, he addressed concerns regarding the company’s disappointing stock performance, showcasing his commitment to transparency and accountability.
In light of Han’s passing, Samsung announced that Jun Young-hyun, who was appointed as co-CEO in November of the previous year, will assume the role of sole CEO. Jun has been leading the memory chip division and was part of the leadership changes that Samsung implemented last year in response to fierce competition in the semiconductor industry. The loss of Han Jong-hee marks a significant moment for Samsung Electronics, as the company reflects on his legacy and the impact he had on its growth and success in the global market.
