Safaricom’s DigiFarm platform won the Best Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets at the 2020 Global Mobile Awards (GLOMO).
DigiFarm provides smallholder farmers with convenient access to services such as: discounted inputs, financing, and advice on best farming practice. Even better it works on any basic 2G enabled mobile phone.
Safaricom partnered with mobile solutions provider Mezzanine to develop DigiFarm.
DigiFarm is being a text-based service is easy to use. Farmers simply register and record details about the size of their farms and the nature of their farming activities.
Digifarm uses this information to ensure farmers receive support relevant to their specific farming activities.
Safaricom CEO, Michael Joseph, said, “This recognition is a true reflection of our dedication to our Transforming Lives purpose. We are constantly finding ways to leverage the power of mobile technology to solve the challenges that communities face every day.”
He adds, “Through DigiFarm we want to empower millions of smallholder farmers by giving them the right tools for economic growth.”

DigiFarm has over 1 million farmers, 300,000 of whom use the platform on a daily basis.
DigiFarm has 144 depots all around Kenya where farmer’s can get access to quality inputs.
Safaricom has partnered iProcure to guarantee the farmers access to high quality inputs, FarmDrive to provide affordable credit and with Arifu, to create relevant information for farmers’ consumption.
The GLOMO 2020 judges said Digifarm had demonstrated very impressive collaboration between stakeholders, demonstrating how relatively simple technology can be used to improve the lives of millions.
