Safaricom slashes data bundle costs and introduces non-expiry packages

Safaricom users now have the option of buying data that is valid for life.

The telco giant celebrated its 19th year of service on October 23rd in a colorful ceremony.

In a statement, Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph said that the company is committed to provide even better service to its customers following its birthday.

The statement read, “We have reviewed all of our products and services, looked at the many customer touchpoints, and examined the customer feedback surveys, good and bad, about how we serve you. Today we are making a commitment to being simple, transparent and honest.”

In light of this, Safaricom begun offering non-expiry data bundles alongside the existing expiry packages.

This comes after various local media reported on a lawsuit against Safaricom, Telkom and Airtel, by Lawyer Adrian Kamotho.

The lawsuit accuses the telcos of exploiting subscribers, and discriminating against poorer subscribers by charging higher prices for longer lasting bundles.

He argued that the companies were depriving users access to unused data bundles that they already paid for through the expiry system.

The new model will see customers bundles remain valid as long as their SIM cards remain active.
