SA Startup PURA Soda Goes Global and Lists Product on Amazon

What if there was a fun, simple way to live a little healthier and quench your thirst a little better? There is. It’s called PURA Soda and it comes with low sugar, natural flavours and no colourants. SA drink startup PURA Soda has listed its product range on the global eCommerce platform, Amazon, enabling the locally-born startup to cross-shores and access an international customer base.

Three years after launching into its local market, the South African lower-calorie, lower-sugar soft drink brand, Pura Soda, is riding the right trend waves and is already available in 13 countries, including the US.

Founder and CEO, Greig Jansen, ascribes the company’s growth to hard work, planning and market research, but acknowledges that the startup has been fortunate to ride the global wave of increasing demand for healthier beverages.

At 11.6g per 330ml can, Pura Soda contains less than half of the sugar of average soft drinks. Pura currently has seven trendy flavors: Cucumber & Lime, Lemon & Elderflower, Pomegranate, Ginger & Lemon, Juniper, Cranberry, Seville Orange.

In a press statement, Greig Jansen, CEO of PURA Soda comments on the expansion of the startup and its presence on Amazon.

“It is essential to focus on expanding both brick and mortar sales, and the brand’s presence in the eCommerce space to secure global distribution. When listing a product on Amazon, this grants access to a huge pool of already established customers with over 70-million transactions taking place on the platform every day.”

According to reports, Amazon invested a recorded $18-billion to support SMEs in growing their sales and overall revenue.

Since its official launch in 2017, the startup has expanded its product footprint to a reported 13 countries across the globe and aims to become the next billion-dollar company.

How Did Coca-Cola Transform from Startup to Global Enterprise?

The idea for Pura Soda came about when Jansen attended a Coca-Cola conference in Mexico in 2013. At the time, he was the CEO of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa in Ethiopia. Jansen, who competes professionally in off-road triathlons, had been considering a gap in the market for a drink that offered good flavor options but contained less sugar.

The Cape Town-based startup has developed a low-sugar soda beverage. Pura claims that its soda drink contains less than a third of the sugar of most soft drinks available in the market and it contains all-natural flavors with zero colorants.
