Pargo Co., Ltd. is a South African-based smart logistics startup that develops a proprietary and technology-based physical network, which allows customers to both send and receive parcels at dedicated pick-up points and currently, Pargo serves customers in South Africa, has launched sustainable packaging that allows online retailers to minimize the environmental impact of last-mile deliveries.
Michaela Gabriel, Head of Marketing at Pargo, the mastermind behind Pargo’s green switch, explains the aim of the new eco-friendly packaging.
“Businesses are in a privileged position to stage interventions that can bring about profound change to our habits of consumption. With Pargo’s adoption of eco-friendly paper packaging, we aim to bring about that change and stimulate conversation concerning the ecological footprint of sending and receiving parcels.”
With a strong focus on environmentally sustainable business practices and supporting a sustainable environment, Pargo has created paper packaging moving away from the traditional plastic materials used. According to a survey conducted by Pargo, 90% of South African consumers prefer sustainable paper packaging over plastic.
Sustainable packaging
Developed in a year in collaboration with popular packaging company Detpak, Pargo’s new sustainable packaging is made from ethically sourced paper and is fully biodegradable. It is available in a mailing bag, C4 envelope, and packaging tape.
Compared to other paper alternatives, the packaging features superior tensile strength and flexibility. According to Pargo, the paper bag has the same strength against water as the paper bags used in the cement industry, making it highly durable.
Carla Breytenbach, Marketing Manager at Detpak comments on the creation of the innovative packaging.
“As a local manufacturer with deep roots in the South African recycling sector, we like to be part of the solution. Since the early 2000s, we have supplied South African brands with award-winning, world-class paper packaging products that help to create a healthy and balanced relationship between consumption and the environment.”
