Chairperson of the Federal Hospitality Association of South Africa, Rosemary Anderson attributes the success of the app to its social impact value as it helps the local hospitality industry.
“Covid-19 has destroyed our industry and financially compromised lots of restaurants currently still in operation. With third-party apps, we can get our economy back on track.

Ryan Marx and Jax Du Plessis established the company earlier this year, the app makes us part of a local business builder, Harken Holdings that owns brands like MoneyPanda.
Fomo’s benefits are twofold, as the first South African app that provides food specials and events, it is also a practical tool that helps restaurants access a lot of consumers.
Co-founder of Fomo, Ryan Marx indicated that motivated the creation of the company. He said, “When searching Google for what to do in a specific location, the results are often generic leaving us with limited options not updated regularly.”
Users can access the operating hours and contacts of nearby restaurants that are provided using geolocation. Users can view their nearby location for current restaurant specials using geolocation.
Also, users can rate and provide feedback on restaurants they visited helping restaurant owners to know where to improve on their services.
He said “Our service enables them to get business in the door and eliminates the digital marketing aspect of promoting their services for them. We focus more on our main competencies which are marketing their specials and they focus on doing what they know best.”
Fomo includes an in-app feature integrated with Google Maps for directions to restaurants or opts for an uber.
Restaurants are listed on the app for a monthly fee of R449 and can list two existing specials at a time.
