Showmax, a leading streaming service in Africa, is gearing up for a major relaunch in February 2024, celebrating its eighth year in the African streaming market. The announcement follows a recent notice on its website, indicating that access to Showmax outside of Africa will cease from December 1, 2023.
The upcoming revamp involves a new logo, a refreshed brand identity, the introduction of a new app, and a completely revamped product suite. This decision comes shortly after Showmax announced a strategic partnership with media giants Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky earlier this year.
The upcoming Showmax will introduce three distinct plans: Showmax Entertainment, Showmax Entertainment Mobile, and the innovative Showmax Premier League. The latter, in collaboration with SuperSport, will be Africa’s first standalone Premier League mobile streaming service, providing comprehensive coverage of the world’s most popular football league to audiences across sub-Saharan Africa.
Showmax is set to migrate onto the global Peacock streaming platform, facilitating rapid scalability. The Peacock platform, recognised for its leadership in sports streaming, recently live-streamed the Super Bowl to over six million users simultaneously.
Known for pioneering trends with its Originals, Showmax plans to enhance its content slate across the continent in preparation for the relaunch. This includes diverse offerings such as the first 2D animation “Twende,” second seasons of popular shows like “Adulting” and “Kwa Mam’Mkhize,” and the debut of new series and films, including the Nigerian legal drama “Agu” and the reality series “Sports Wives.”
In a strategic move, Showmax secured a partnership with Comcast, ensuring a consistent supply of hit international content. Viewers can anticipate a significant increase in international titles in the coming year, with notable releases like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Fast X” already featured in the December lineup.
Acknowledged as one of the Rest of World 40 (RoW40) companies by a global non-profit organisation and recognised at Nigeria’s 2023 BrandCom Awards as the ‘Most Innovative On-demand Video Streaming Platform,’ Showmax is poised to lead the streaming landscape in Africa.
Showmax CEO Marc Jury expresses confidence in the platform’s readiness to become the number one streaming service for the continent, emphasising its unique combination of African and international content.
Launched in 2015 and available in over 40 African markets, Showmax is a leading streaming service jointly owned by MultiChoice and Comcast, two influential entities in the video entertainment and media industries, respectively.
