At Lancaster University, a group of scientists has come up with an entirely new type of memory called “UltraRAM.” It combines the data storage of solid-state storage with the ultra-fast speed of modern RAM. It’s a new way to use Apple’s M1 line of processors, which use a unified memory system that can share RAM between different parts of the computer to make it run faster.
As applications run on the computer, Apple’s new Macs let both the CPU and the GPU share system memory. This is based on how much memory each programme needs at any given time. In this latest tech, there is a chance that socketed RAM could do the job of an SSD faster than the storage solutions that are already available.
However, it is important to know how RAM and SSDs work in order to understand why UltraRAM’s unified memory is important. Random-access memory, also known as RAM, is a type of storage for computers and mobile devices that can be erased at any time.
Considering the way RAM works, it can easily discover and hold important information, and then immediately throw it away in exchange for more important data. Because solid-state storage (like SSDs in computers) doesn’t lose data, it can store data for a long time, but it doesn’t move as fast as RAM, which can move data quickly. RAM can reach speeds that are only limited by the amount of heat it produces. SSDs, on the other hand, trade that potential speed for long-term storage.
The findings by Lancaster University show a new type of RAM that can store files even when there is no power. It also has the same speed as modern RAM.
This is how the science works: It uses different semiconductors, which are also found in LEDs and lasers, to store information for a long time without having electricity. This is why UltraRAM has been called the next all-in-one memory solution.
If UltraRAM can store data for a long time with the same speed as current RAM, which is getting small enough to go into the gaming phone market, it could be able to do away with the need for SSDs.
Unlike Lancaster University’s UltraRAM concept, Apple’s M1 range of chips features a different sort of unified memory. The system-on-a-chip (SoC) houses the RAM modules in the M1 processor (SoC). There is an SoC that has a CPU, GPU, and neural engine all on one chip. This means that the computer can access memory between any of these three processors as needed.
An SSD alternative, UltraRAM uses the concept of unified memory. Rather than sharing the memory between the different processing units, UltraRAM may be able to use the memory to store long-term data at very high speeds instead.
As soon as UltraRAM hits the market, it could make a big difference in how people use their computers in their every day lives. There’s a good chance that even though the memory can only store a small amount of data because it is so fast, it could still store important, frequently used data.
UltraRAM could be used to store the operating system. Even the most casual computer users would notice a significant reduction in boot time if the operating system were loaded onto current RAM.
