It can be tempting to tell a lie in your curriculum vitae because you want to land a big job. However, the short-term gains you might make in landing the job through deception can have long-term consequences that may do serious damage to your career. Without further ado, we share reasons why you should not tell lies on your CV.

You will be caught

Whether you apply directly to the company or go via a recruiter, your lie will be exposed at some point. It’s just not worth it. It is costly for a company to hire someone new and most companies these days perform background checks. This could include the obvious reference checking but employers are savvy to the benefits of digging deeper.

It makes it hard to trust you in the future. 

Even if you get the job, your new boss/colleagues might be a little weary in putting their full trust in you – after all, you’ve lied before. That is if they have decided not to kick you out.

Your reputation

If you lie on your CV, get fired then try to find another role, are you going to lie further when the next employer asks you why you left your last job? It is not worth it!

Gross misconduct

If you have taken the risk to lie on your CV and the employer finds out after you have started working for them, you may get fired for gross misconduct. It may be difficult for you to get another job.

It might stop you from getting the job 

Embellishing your CV in order to appear qualified for a job may actually stop you from getting the job. This is simply because you are not qualified for the position. Therefore, you will get the interview invite but you will fumble during the interview.
