In 2019, Google replaced its “Express App” with Google Shopping to further consolidate its online shopping experiences.
The company just announced that it is shutting down mobile apps for shopping on iOS and Android. Users can continue shopping using the website instead.
Last Friday, April 9th 2021, programmers at Xda Developers discovered that the term “sunset” was added to several strings of code used in the Shopping app. By this, the developers suggested that the apps were being discontinued by Google.
9to5 Google which spoke to one of Google’s staff confirmed that the apps will continue to function through June. According to the Google spokesperson, the Shopping app will stop working over the next few weeks. “All of its app’s functionality will no longer be available to its users, except on the Shopping tab. We will continue building features within the Shopping tab and other Google surfaces, including the Google app.” The spokesperson further confirmed that the shopping.google.com site will remain active.
The Shopping App was helpful as it allowed users to select items from thousands of online stores. It also enabled users to make purchases using their Google accounts.
Someone tweeted the above image on April 8th to alert other users after he discovered the “Something went wrong” notification on the app.
More information will be shared as we receive updates or learn more concerning the issue with the Google Shopping app.
