Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. announced that its latest flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G Mobile Platform is powering Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.’s latest and most cutting-edge smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S21 series (S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra), for select regions.

Snapdragon 888 packs industry-leading mobile innovations in 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), gaming, and camera technologies that will transform premium mobile devices into professional-quality cameras, intelligent personal assistants, and elite gaming rigs.

Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager, mobile, compute, and infrastructure (MCI), Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. said, “We are very proud to continue our longstanding strategic collaboration with Samsung Electronics to deliver the latest breakthrough mobile experiences to consumers.

“Powered by the flagship Snapdragon 888 in select regions, the new Galaxy S21 series pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in mobile.”

KJ Kim, executive vice president and head of mobile R&D, mobile communications business, Samsung Electronics said, “Samsung is committed to delivering the most innovative mobile experiences to consumers and the new Galaxy S21 series, powered by the flagship Snapdragon 888 5G Mobile Platform in select regions, helps to make that possible.

“The new Galaxy S21 series delivers the most advanced 5G connectivity, on-device AI, and the latest cutting-edge camera features.”

The Galaxy S21 series takes advantage of Snapdragon 888’s major architectural advances. Manufactured on the latest 5nm process technology and based on Arm Cortex-X1, Snapdragon 888 features the Qualcomm® Kryo 680, which generates up to a 25% uplift in overall CPU performance compared to the previous generation and allows top frequencies of up to 2.84GHz. The Qualcomm® Adreno  660 GPU achieves its biggest performance leap yet, delivering up to 35% faster graphics rendering compared to the previous generation.

The completely re-designed 6th generation Qualcomm AI Engine with the new Qualcomm Hexagon 780 processor enables premium experiences that blend AI with professional cameras, elite gaming, lightning-fast connectivity, and more. Snapdragon 888 delivers industry-leading AI performance with up to three times performance per watt improvement over the prior generation and power efficiency—all at an astonishing 26 TOPS.

Snapdragon 888 integrates the Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF System, the third generation 5G modem-to-antenna solution, which supports sub-6 carrier aggregation and mmWave to deliver the world’s fastest commercially available 5G speeds, up to 7.5 Gbps. The Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF System supports superior coverage across virtually all major networks worldwide – including nationwide 5G thanks to the use of Dynamic Spectrum Sharing technology.

The Galaxy S21 series takes advantage of Snapdragon 888’s new Qualcomm Spectra 580, featuring triple ISPs, which is capable of capturing from three cameras simultaneously at breakthrough processing speeds—up to 2.7 gigapixels per second. Snapdragon 888 enables the capture of 120fps burst snapshots for capturing ultra-fast high-resolution action shots, 4K HDR video capture, and photo capture in the HEIF format.

The Galaxy S21 series also features the largest in-display fingerprint sensor in a global smartphone, the new Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2, an 8×8 sensor, which is engineered to allow the device to detect a larger fingerprint image than its predecessor, allowing for an improved user experience. The Galaxy S21 series’ ultrasonic sensor is 30% faster and 1.7x larger than the previous generation. Unlike alternative authentication solutions, Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor uses acoustic-based technology that reflects the unique features of a user’s fingerprint.
