For the first time, Qualcomm and correction services platform Trimble are teaming up to deliver meter-level accuracy to Android handsets’ location services. Trimble RTX GNSS technology is now available on smartphones powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 888 system-on-chips. This technology will give high-accuracy solutions for connected vehicles, ADAS, and autonomous driving to automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, making Android phones with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 888 Mobile Platforms able to measure location data down to one meter (approximately three feet).
According to Trimble, using a Trimble RTX-based correction service in conjunction with a Snapdragon 888 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, smartphone manufacturers, service providers, and application developers will have robust meter-level accuracy (of approximately 3 feet) on devices running those processors. This represents a 5x improvement in location accuracy over the current standard of accuracy available today.
By combining Trimble RTX with Qualcomm’s premium mobile platforms, Android phones now have even greater precision in their location. Using a Trimble RTX-based rectification service, smartphone makers, service providers, and application developers will be able to give mobile consumers robust meter-level accuracy (or around 3 feet). This is a five-fold increase in location accuracy over what is currently available in the market.
For those who use their smartphone for navigation, driving, or any other mobile application, having accurate location information is a huge plus. When a ride-sharing app has more precise positioning, both the driver and the rider can have a better experience when the pick-up location is more precisely shown. Furthermore, drivers who use real-time navigation applications can benefit from improved map detail and direction accuracy because of the inclusion of lane-level accuracy in these applications.
Trimble will now work with Qualcomm Technologies to provide high-accuracy positioning solutions for connected vehicles, ADAS, and autonomous driving to automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. As of the second quarter of 2022, Trimble RTX technology will be accessible on the Snapdragon 8 and 888 mobile platforms.
