French development finance institution Proparco has finalized an investment in BasiGo, a Nairobi-based e-mobility start-up that is transforming public transportation in Kenya and Rwanda through electric bus solutions.
BasiGo currently operates a fleet of 100 electric buses across the two countries. The company not only assembles electric buses locally but also develops and manages charging infrastructure. In addition, BasiGo partners with public transport operators to provide a cost-effective, sustainable alternative to diesel-powered buses, helping African cities transition toward cleaner mobility.
Proparco’s investment aligns with the AFD Group’s broader commitment to promoting low-carbon urban mobility worldwide. The Group allocates approximately €1 billion annually to transport and mobility projects, reinforcing its dedication to climate-friendly solutions.
Jean Guyonnet-Dupérat, Regional Director for East Africa at Proparco, stated:
By supporting BasiGo, we are helping to unlock a new generation of clean, reliable mass public transport solutions for tens of thousands of passengers in Kenya and Rwanda, and to scale this solution in other African cities.
Jit Bhattacharya, CEO and co-founder of BasiGo, added:
Proparco’s investment is a powerful endorsement of the future we are building for African cities. Since 2021, BasiGo has demonstrated that electric buses deliver stronger economics for operators while reducing CO₂ emissions and providing a comfortable experience for passengers. This investment validates our model and serves as a catalyst for the next phase of growth.
