Proparco has entered into a significant partnership with Equity Group to bolster sustainable agriculture initiatives in Kenya. This collaboration is set to provide technical assistance amounting to one million euros to the Equity Group Foundation (EGF) for the implementation of its “Climate Resilient Agri-Food Systems” (CRAFS) project.
The formal signing ceremony took place in Nairobi and was graced by notable attendees, including the French Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Arnaud Suquet, Proparco’s Regional Director for East Africa, Jean Guyonnet-Dupérat, and Equity Group’s CEO, Dr. James Mwangi.
The primary objective of the CRAFS project is to assist smallholder farmers in Kenya in adopting Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices. These innovative methods are designed to enhance farm productivity, mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, and reduce harmful emissions through sustainable farming techniques.
Agriculture is a cornerstone of Kenya’s economy, contributing approximately 30% to the nation’s GDP and nearly half of its export earnings. It plays a vital role in supporting 75% of rural households and provides employment to over 70% of the rural population, including a significant number of women and young people.
Through the CRAFS initiative, the Equity Group Foundation will provide a range of support services to small-scale farmers, including training, access to finance, and knowledge-sharing programs. The project aims to reach 15,000 farmers annually, focusing on enhancing both crop and livestock value chains. Additionally, it will offer practical assistance in areas such as sustainable energy utilization, water harvesting, waste-to-energy solutions, and the adoption of improved farming techniques.
Ambassador Suquet commended the initiative, emphasizing the critical role of agriculture in Kenya’s development. He stated, “This collaboration will support small businesses and help grassroots solutions emerge in key sectors like agriculture, health, education, and clean energy.”
Jean Guyonnet-Dupérat, Proparco’s Regional Director, expressed pride in continuing the partnership with Equity Group, noting, “EGF is making a real difference by empowering farmers and supporting innovation in agriculture. We are pleased to support this important work.”
Dr. Mwangi welcomed the partnership, describing it as a pivotal step toward fostering stronger and more resilient farming communities. He remarked, “This partnership is about helping farmers and communities thrive in the face of climate change. Climate-Smart Agriculture will help them improve their yields, adapt to climate risks, and secure their livelihoods.”
Established in 2008 as the social arm of Equity Group Holdings, the Equity Group Foundation continues to lead impactful development programs across Kenya and beyond, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing the lives of communities through sustainable practices.
