365 days ago, the PS5 was launched. To celebrate the anniversary, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan shared a post of the journey in the last year.
Two weeks after launch, Sony declared this to be the largest launch in PlayStation history, surpassing PS4’s 2.1 million units in its first two weeks in 2013. During the system’s first week of release in Japan, 103,901 standard consoles were sold, and 14,181 Digital Editions were sold. A combined total of 118,082 PS5s were sold in Japan during its launch week making it the best-selling console in the country for that week
According to Jim Ryan, PS5 gamers have collectively played more than 4.6 billion hours of gameplay on PS5 and broadcast more than 26 million hours of content. Here is a look at the top ten PS5 games played during PS5’s first year, based on gameplay hours:

- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
- Destiny 2

According to Sony, PS5 had sold 13.4 million units as of September 30, 2021, contributing in part to its financial results for the three months ended September 30, 2021.
Sony’s sales reached ¥645.4 billion ($5.7 billion) for the game segment, while operating income decreased 21% to ¥82.7 billion ($727 million). Revenue was reported as ¥1.2 trillion ($10.8 billion) in revenue.
This console is so much in high demand that since Sony launched the PlayStation 5, buyers have been witnessing a shortage of gaming consoles in the market.
Sony has reportedly confirmed that the console will remain in short supply through 2022 as well.
