Guided Search and Custom exploration are two new products introduced by the visual discovery company: Pinterest. This is an expanded search engine for its mobile apps on iOS and Android which helps you browse your interests more effectively than you can on a traditional search engine. The guided search feature returns a list of Pinterest tiles for your searches that are popular among users. Search “technology,” for example, and you’ll see a list of trending items with that tag across the network. You can also add additional keywords to every query to focus your search.
The press event at Pinterest’s SF headquarters also saw CEO Ben Silbermann give a momentum update, saying Pinterest users had pinned 30 billion total pins and that number is up 50% in the last 6 months. He also revealed that 90% of pins now include related pins and Pinterest currently host 750 million boards.
Pinterest is a visual discovery tool that people use to collect ideas for their different projects and interests. People create and share collections (called “boards”) of visual bookmarks (called “Pins”) that they use to do things like plan trips and projects, organize events or save articles and recipes.
Guided search represents the most significant of three announcements Pinterest made tonight at its headquarters. The company also is adding the ability for users to add custom categories within the app to better focus on their interests.
Custom Categories creates a dynamic feed of very specific topics, such as Bob Dylan. Silbermann described how the Pinterest team picked the traditional categories available from the homescreen somewhat haphazardly and there was a lot of debate about what to offer next. Custom Categories allow you to “Choose Your Own Adventure” (the theme of the press event), finding categories that match your taste no matter how obscure.
