If you thought you’d never get to see the day when iMessage gets to Android, well, today is that day. An open source project called PieMessage has hit GitHub. PieMessage isn’t an official project by Apple but project enables Android users to communicate using Apple’s iPhone messaging platform., and so far he’s done a good job at it.
The project isn’t as easy as you might think since the app developer Eric Chee is looking for help from other developers to get this app finished and published. PieMessage uses a Mac and OS X as a server currently, so yes, you need a Mac to enable this to work.
This isn’t the first attempt such solution to Android users but the difference with previous apps is, they used third party servers to route messages which of course raised security concerns among users and Apple but PieMessage allow users to use their own Macs for this.
Below is a video of the developer shows off the completed app and its basic functions, but there are additional features/fixes he wants to build in before it sees the main stage. In the GitHub project, you can find the OS X client and an Android client as well as “messages.applescript” and Java Web Server, this is what actually makes sending iMessages possible. And since the project uses a custom API, it’s possible for other developers to build clients for other platforms.
