The Past Is Here Again: A Review of The New Nokia 3310

2001 was the year when GSM got introduced to the public in Nigeria. People no longer had to wait to get home to know who called and when. Cell phones weren’t so exclusive anymore. I could finally ditch the NITEL call cards that I carried around in my wallet and the dusty organizer where I recorded every phone number of those I know.

It was a period of liberation – a period of not having to share phone numbers or phone with another.

There were very few phone manufacturers that enjoyed the confidence consumers had in the Nokia brand.

The Nokia 3310 was an important part of the revolution that changed the mode of communication. It was a great companion in that period when we were contented with just receiving calls and sending messages on a phone. We spent hours building high scores on the snake game. Batteries lasted for weeks at a time and we didn’t care much for readability.

    Simple times I tell you.

If there was ever an embodiment of nostalgia for the 90s kids, the Nokia 3310 was such phone.

Items of fashion have been brought back many times with more contemporary edge and we totally rocked them. The news that the same was going to be done with the Nokia 3310 made for heart-warming news.

The Nokia 3310 got a facelift and we are all for it.

The new Nokia 3310 comes in four colour tones-red, blue, yellow and grey. The shape is very much like the original, curved around the edges with a 2.4-inch polarized screen that makes for better readability under the light. It weighs 79.6g, a welcomed improvement from the older version that weighed 133g.

The new 3310 is better equipped for 2017 with an expandable RAM of up to 32, USB 2.0 that makes it easy for media to be transferred and also as a charging port. It has a back camera of 2MP and an led flash.

Of course, it comes preinstalled with the snake game. It is supported by 2G network One thing that the old Nokia 3310 was known for was its long battery life which Nokia brought back in the 2017 edition. The phone can be on for a month on standby and go an entire day of use without being charged. The 2.4 inch screen and push buttons is reminiscent of the old 3310.

An FM radio, MP3 player and Bluetooth brings it up to speed with today’s basic phone features.

I love how much the features have been stepped up but I still ache for the green screen, if I am going to drive an old sports car from the 80s, I would want it complete with the manual gear system.

Would you be getting yourself one?

The Nokia 3310 was released in February 2017 and you can get one for between 25,000 to 30,000naira from any of the popular phone retailers.

You can get one that has a single or dual sim option.
