Opera, a global web innovator, is expanding its free data campaign to Ethiopia in partnership with Safaricom, a recent entrant into the Ethiopian market. This initiative aligns with Opera’s commitment to enhancing internet access across Africa, particularly focusing on mobile products and services designed for African consumers. With over $100 million invested in the region to provide faster and more reliable internet connectivity, Opera’s free data campaigns have already benefited nearly 40 million people across five countries, fostering business growth, connecting loved ones, and facilitating education.
Opera’s Africa First strategy, launched in December 2017, places African consumers at the forefront of its product development. This approach has led to significant investments in the region to increase internet accessibility. By partnering with local telecommunications companies, Opera has played a crucial role in enabling millions of people to enjoy up to 3 GB of free monthly browsing. In Kenya alone, Opera has invested over $12 million in free data campaigns over the past three years.
Despite its potential, Ethiopia currently has a nationwide internet penetration rate of only 16.7 percent. Opera aims to change this by collaborating with long-time partner Safaricom to expand Ethiopia’s digital economy. This partnership builds on their successful collaboration in the past, which provided many users across the continent with their first access to the web. Opera’s goal is to bring millions of new users online in Ethiopia and contribute to the country’s digital growth.
As part of the campaign, Opera users in Ethiopia will enjoy up to 50 MB of free browsing every day when using Opera Mini or Opera for Android on the Safaricom network. The offer excludes video streaming and file downloads and is applicable to the latest versions of Opera Mini and Opera for Android.
