OpenAI has recently launched a platform named GPT Store which hosts a variety of GPTs (custom chatbot apps powered by the company’s AI models like GPT-4 and DALL-E 3). This store is accessible via a new tab in the ChatGPT client and features a broad range of GPTs developed by both OpenAI’s partners and the larger developer community.
Access to the GPT Store requires subscription to one of OpenAI’s premium ChatGPT plans such as ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Enterprise, or the recently launched ChatGPT Team. Initial offerings in the store include a trail recommender from AllTrails, a code tutor from Khan Academy, and a content designer from Canva.
Creating GPTs requires no prior coding experience, as developers simply need to specify the desired capabilities of their GPT in plain language. The GPT Builder tool will then endeavor to create an AI-driven chatbot that delivers these capabilities. These GPTs can be trained on a range of materials, from cookbook collections to proprietary codebases.
Before GPTs can be listed in the store, developers must verify their user profiles and submit their GPTs for review per OpenAI’s new system featuring a combination of human and automated review processes. While currently free, OpenAI plans to launch a “GPT builder revenue program” in Q1, allowing U.S. developers to earn income based on user engagement with their GPTs.
Lastly, while GPTs democratize AI app development, it remains to be seen how this might impact consultancies whose business revolves around building similar tools for clients.
