OpenAI has recently appointed its inaugural chief economist, Aaron Chatterji, who brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles as the chief economist at the Commerce Department under President Joe Biden and as a senior economist in President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers.
Chatterji, who is also a distinguished professor of business and public policy at Duke University, will delve into the economic ramifications of artificial intelligence at OpenAI. His research will focus on exploring how AI could potentially reshape economic growth and the landscape of job opportunities.
A significant part of Chatterji’s background includes his involvement in the Biden administration’s execution of the 2022 CHIPS Act. This legislation allocated approximately $280 billion towards the advancement of computer chip development in the United States. His deep understanding of this initiative, along with his political network, is expected to be advantageous for OpenAI as it explores its own chip design projects.
In addition to Chatterji’s recruitment, OpenAI made another notable hire by bringing on board Scott Schools as the new chief compliance officer. Schools, who previously served as the associate deputy attorney general and was the head of compliance at Uber, will collaborate closely with OpenAI’s board and various teams within the organization. His role will encompass overseeing legal requirements and upholding ethical standards, as stated by OpenAI.
