OpenAI, the innovative AI research lab, has introduced a new feature to ChatGPT, allowing users to seamlessly invoke and integrate third-party applications powered by its AI models directly into conversations. Paid users of ChatGPT can now leverage this functionality by typing “@” and selecting a GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) from a provided list, enabling a more dynamic and contextually rich interaction.
This enhancement empowers users to tag in relevant GPTs with a comprehensive understanding of the ongoing conversation. Different GPTs can be invoked for various purposes, each contributing to the conversation based on the context of preceding interactions. The feature aims to make GPTs more discoverable and integrated into the ChatGPT user experience.
The recent update follows the launch of the GPT Store, a marketplace accessible through the ChatGPT dashboard, offering various GPTs developed by third-party creators. Building GPTs through this platform requires no coding experience and can range from simple to complex applications. Notable examples include a trail recommender from AllTrails, a code tutor from Khan Academy, and a content designer from Canva.
OpenAI plans to introduce monetization options for developers interested in selling access to their GPTs in the future. However, the current challenge lies in boosting traffic to the platform. Data from Similarweb indicates that custom GPTs constitute only around 2.7% of ChatGPT’s worldwide web traffic, with a decline observed since November.
Moderation remains a concern, especially after the launch of the GPT Store, which saw the influx of “romantic” chatbots and political campaigning bots. OpenAI, using a combination of human and automated review processes, has been actively addressing violations of its terms, removing inappropriate applications.
OpenAI shared the news on Twitter: “You can now bring GPTs into any conversation in ChatGPT – simply type @ and select the GPT. This allows you to add relevant GPTs with the full context of the conversation.”
The update received positive responses on Twitter, with users expressing excitement about the evolving capabilities of ChatGPT. Some users suggested improvements, such as including a category named “All GPTs” in search options.
The move aligns with OpenAI’s vision of creating a collaborative ecosystem where AI agents work together seamlessly, fostering a more engaging and productive user experience. As the platform continues to evolve, it opens up possibilities for a diverse range of AI applications integrated into everyday conversations.
