One Number, a value added service provider in mobile telecommunications, recently released a sticker themed around the Hausa language and culture called Arewan Mu. Arewan mu is a Hausa phrase meaning ‘our arewa’, while arewa means the general Hausa-speaking far North.
One Number started came to our attention when they first released their previous BBM sticker collection called Naija 4 Life, which was inspired by Nigerian slangs. Arewan Mu follows a similar pattern.
The sticker characters are a man in white kaftan and cap, a woman in blue native blouse and wrapper; and another man in a blue babariga. A woman in a white attire makes a single appearance however.
The expressions are hilarious, and are mostly part of the vocabulary a regular Hausa speaker.
