OMRON Healthcare, a health monitoring and therapy firm launch OMRON Complete, its first single-led blood pressure (BP) and electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor for home use.
The device is designed to detect atrial fibrillation (AFib) the most prominent arrhythmia in clinical practice. OMRON Complete integrates clinically validated ECG technology that can be used simultaneously with the usual BP check which could possibly reduce the unnecessary appointments and consultation time in a situation where health care services are in high demand.
High blood pressure has been confirmed by medical guidelines as one of the risk factors in about 60% of AFib cases which makes medical guidelines recommend opportunistic AFib screening in the systemic screening of all individuals who are over 75 years of age and in hypertensive patients. This evidence is a roof that the widespread use of home blood pressure monitoring technology improved with ECG capabilities will allow people and clinicians to detect AFib presence and keep the risk factor for stroke under control once an appropriate diagnosis has been made.
The marketing director of OMRON Healthcare Europe, Lucia Prada said: “We developed the device to ensure the identification of the leading cause of strokes easy and routine. AFib may not show any symptoms and may not be resent when a doctor visits because they appear and disappear which means it’s often left undiagnosed. This is a reason why ECGs are needed in homes to allow taking regular readings by at-risk patients and shared with GPs to increase the odds alongside their usual blood pressure reading, without any additional inconvenience.”
Global senior general manager at OMRON Healthcare, Andre van Gils said “It is all about building a more complete picture of cardiovascular health. This will provide practitioners with more comprehensive data sets for chronic diseases such as hypertension and AFib, preventing and managing serious incidents becomes easier. Such technologies cans save lives while assisting practitioners in delivering more personalized care and depicts a solid step forward in our zero cardiovascular events vision.”
OMRON Complete is made up of a blood pressure monitoring and an arm cuff unit equipped with a smartphone docking station, two side electrodes, and two electrodes used in placing the thumbs and fingers for taking the ECG readings. After airing the OMRON connect to the device, and launching the app the blood pressure and ECG readings will be displayed on the smartphone screen which includes a message on the detection of AFib with further detailed information. The data is recorded automatically and can be shared with GPs to provide comprehensive records of BP and ECG readings.
