Nokia Report Reveals 5G Boom Across MEA Region

Nokia latest Mobile Broadband Index Report 2024 has revealed a sharp rise in 5G adoption across the Middle East and Africa (MEA), signaling a major shift in the region’s digital transformation journey.

According to the report, 60% of communication service providers (CSPs) in the MEA region are already adopting 5G to accelerate their digital transformation strategies. While 4G subscriptions are expected to plateau by 2027, 5G uptake is set to surge, positioning it as the dominant mobile technology by the end of the decade.

By 2029, the report projects that 5G subscriptions will reach 519 million across the MEA region, accounting for nearly 23% of all mobile subscriptions. Moreover, 48% of total data traffic will be driven by 5G, underscoring its growing influence on the region’s connectivity ecosystem.

GCC Region Leads in 5G Adoption

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are leading this transformation, with 90% of all mobile subscriptions projected to be 5G by 2029. This growth is attributed to strong government support, extensive infrastructure investments, and robust deployment of next-generation connectivity solutions.

In the GCC alone, 90% of data traffic is expected to run on 5G networks, reflecting the sub-region’s aggressive rollout strategies and advanced readiness for high-speed connectivity.

5G Driving Data Growth and FWA Expansion

The surge in 5G adoption is also reshaping the data traffic landscape. By 2029, 5G and 4G networks will collectively account for over 90% of total data traffic in the MEA region.

Another major development highlighted in the report is the rise of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) powered by 5G. FWA adoption is projected to grow from 11% in 2022 to 38% by 2029, driven by the demand for faster internet and low-latency connectivity, especially in remote or underserved areas.

    Accelerating Digital Transformation

Commenting on the findings, Mikko Lavanti, Senior Vice President for Mobile Networks, MEA at Nokia, said:

“The adoption of 5G is increasingly important for countries across MEA to meet the rising demand for data services. This transition accelerates digital transformation while allowing CSPs to unlock new revenue opportunities. Nokia’s services empower CSPs to unlock the full potential of their networks, delivering advanced connectivity solutions that are critical for the region’s development.”

As governments and operators continue to invest in next-generation networks, 5G is set to become the backbone of digital growth in the MEA region, driving innovation across industries and empowering millions with faster, more reliable connectivity.
