No, Pepsi is not going into the smartphone business

Recently the internet has been agog with rumours of a Pepsi phone. The likes of Mashable and The Verge reported that Pepsi was indeed making its own phone – Pepsi P1.

The online blogs cited online site Mobipicker, a blog that covers mobile phones, that the Pepsi P1 was an android phone and even stated its features – 5.5-inch 1080p display, a 1.7 GHz MediaTek processor, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a 3000 mAh battery. They even published what the phone would look like. Well all these have turned out to be false as Reuters has reported that PepsiCo was only working with a licensing partner to market a line of mobile phones and accessories in China in the next few months. It reported that s PesiCo spokesman said that “The food and beverage company however has no plans to get into the mobile phone manufacturing business.”

The spokeswoman did not name the licensing partner or give any further details about the phone.

If it was found to be true, I really would have wondered what the food and beverage company hoped to gain by going into the mobile phone business.
