No more free access to Nollywood movies on iROKOtv…

Jason Njoku, Founder and CEO of iROKOtv, has just announced that there will be no more free access to Nollywood movies on iROKOtv.

According to him on a blog post recently,

After spending the best part of 2.5 years building a multi-million dollar freemium service with 95% free and 5% paid for at $5 (3 month commitments), we are going to spend the rest of 2014 dismantling it. We are basically going to kill iROKOtv Free.

Current users will be migrated to the new subscription based service, iROKOtv Plus, which has a simple value proposition – 14-day free trial. Access to over 10,000 hours of truly the best Nollywood content. No adverts.

Will Users leave iROKOtv and move over to the other competitors such AfriNolly, Dobox and the others? Jason seems to think that he can weather the storm. Moreover, he has just gotten another $4 million apart from the $8 million he got in December 2013. So he has a lot of money to play with.

Well as he says “The game is ours to lose. We have 90 smart people who do nothing else. Not sell airtime or compete in competitions or any of that time wastage. We execute. That’s why we are #1 in Africa. We pioneered and continue to lead digital distribution in Nigeria content.”
