The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has launched a self-service solution that allows Nigerians to easily register for their National Identification Number (NIN) using their smartphones. The platform’s launch coincided with the commemoration of the 5th Identity Day by the Commission and the Ministry of Interior in Abuja.
During the launch event on Saturday, the Acting Director General/CEO of the NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, emphasized the significance of identity in the country. She highlighted that identity represents more than just a card or a number; it signifies individual existence, entitlements, and societal placement, opening doors to essential services, social benefits, and personal and economic growth opportunities. She also stressed the importance of prioritizing privacy and data protection principles while ensuring inclusivity in providing identity solutions for all.
Coker-Odusote underscored that a robust identity management system could aid in addressing insecurity issues and providing vital support to Nigerians.
The introduction of the self-service solution aims to expedite the registration process, addressing concerns about the time taken for registration and feedback. Nigerians can now register from the comfort of their homes. For those without digital tools, NIMC offices and local front-end partners remain accessible.
Speaking to the press after the event, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, emphasized the Federal Government’s intention to harmonize all identity data related to Nigerians. This harmonization effort encompasses data from various sources, including BVN, telcos, NIMC, voters’ identification, and more, working in collaboration with NIMC as the statutory body responsible for maintaining the national identity database.
The self-service enrollment system introduced by NIMC will be powered by Banksforte Technology Limited, a subsidiary of the Banksforte Group, offering expertise in project management, construction engineering, ICT, and other domains.
Despite the official launch, the self-service application, named NIMC Contactless Biometric Solution, was not yet available for download on both PlayStore and App Store at the time of observation.
