It was a galant effort but the two hour marathon barrier was not broken. The question on the minds of most sports lovers this morning was – Who will break the two-hour marathon barrier?
Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya won the race but missed the mark by 25 seconds. He finished the race in 2:00:25. He beat the current marathon world record for men of 2:02:57, set by Dennis Kimetto of Kenya on September 28, 2014 at the Berlin Marathon.
Though Kipchoge’s feat is laudable, it will not count for record-keeping purposes, because pacers were utilized throughout the entire race,
The race which kicked off at 5.45a.m., was streamed live on Twitter and Facebook with a free feed provided by Nike.
The other two runners in the race, Zersenay Tadese and Lelisa Desisa, finished at 2:06:51 and 2:14:10 respectively.
You can watch the exciting race on Nike’s Breaking2 Facebook page for up to one week after the event ends.
According to Nike, “The barrier just got that much closer.”
