To inform members of the public on the transformational benefits of broadband in Nigeria, the nation’s Broadband Council has launched an awareness campaign to encourage broadband use and adoption.

The theme of the campaign is “Connected Nigeria, Connected Nigerians’’ and inform Nigerians about the benefits of broadband including what can be gained by adopting broadband access.  It will also share information on how broadband is creating economic and social value for Nigerians.

At the third meeting of the council held yesterday (Monday), members of the council reviewed work done so far on the implementation of the Broadband Plan.  The council discussed current status of efforts aimed at reducing or removing Right of Way (RoW) charges and other related fees to enable operators have unencumbered means of laying fibre optic cables, which is critical for infrastructure development and quality of service.

Chairman of the Council and Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, spoke on ongoing engagement of state governors and relevant authorities at the state and federal level to address the issue of multiple taxations.

She said: “Already, states like Lagos State have signed on with other states expected to follow in the coming months.

“The aim is to ensure that measures are adopted to remove arbitrary charges and eradicate multiple taxations necessary for effective service delivery across the nation.”
