The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) has disclosed that Nigerians spent a total of N402 Million Naira on movie tickets last month despite the harsh state of the economy.
Nigerians can be seen on various media complaining bitterly about the poor state of the economy and the unpleasant standard of living which in fact they are right about but yet spare no funds when it comes to relaxation and entertaining themselves.
The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) on Tuesday, 2 July released movie statistics for the month of June 2019 and according to box office records, Nigerian moviegoers spent a total of NGN 402.9 million in movie theatres all over the country. Fascinating as it may sound, the bulk of the figure was reached in the third week of June.
According to reports, the month of June saw movies like ‘Aladdin’, ‘John Wick’ and ‘Godzilla’ rake in NGN 161 Mn for cinemas across the country. These three movies accounted for the bulk of money generated in that month.
Things slowed down a little by the end of the third week despite the fact that two high profile movies ‘Dark Phoenix’ and ‘Men In Black International’ hit the screens, cinema revenue dropped. Both movies drew in over NGN 44 Mn. Moviegoers spent a total of NGN 95.7 Mn during this period.
The fourth week of June and the third were also slow with cinemas turning in just about NGN 61 Mn and NGN 85 Mn respectively during those two weeks.
Interestingly, among the Hollywood movies and their attendant hype. Nollywood movie ‘The Bling Lagosians scored high topping the box office by the end of the month.
