According to the 2019 Q1 Social Flagship report, the latest GlobalWebIndex’s flagship report on the latest trends in social media, Nigerians spend an average of 3 hours 36 minutes engaging with/connected to social networks during a typical day.
This is higher than the global average of 2 hours and 23 minutes. Philippines recorded the highest among the 45 markets surveyed with an average of just above 4 minutes.
In around half of the markets that Global Web Index surveyed, social media use had shrunk or plateaued in Q1 2019 when compared with 2018 figures.
The survey also showed that emerging markets continue to spend the most time on social networks during a typical day. This could be due to younger demographics of these markets with the 16 to 24-year-old segment driving growth globally. The importance of messaging apps to this demographic is a key reason behind this, as is the centrality of smartphones to their digital lives.
Interestingly, developed countries like Japan, Germany and Austria spend less than 1 hour 20 minutes on social media. This is likely a result of many internet users having a better awareness of the time they spend looking at screens, as well as the perceived negative effects associated with social media usage, and wanting a digital detox as a result.
