The government of Delta state in southern Nigeria has announced it has procured innovative state-of-the-art sophisticated equipment for Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) located at Oghara. The new equipment is used for the care of infants during the first month after birth.

This announcement was made by the state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan. He also launched a special telephone network service that would enable the clinic to give expert advice on child care to other hospitals in the state.

The neonatal care machines would enable experts at the hospital to take care of infants within the first 28 days of life, especially babies born prematurely.

The governor said the procurement and installation of the machines are part of measures being taken by his administration to tackle health challenges in the state’s sector and to reduce infant mortality.

For the neonatal phone network, he said 100 phones have been acquired by the State’s Ministry of Health for the initiative which he said would would facilitate exchange of expert information on new born babies between neonatologists at Oghara and doctors at other hospitals across the state.

He said: “the innovation was aimed at enhancing the survival of babies within the first 28 days of life, which is the most critical stage in the life of an infant.”
