As the International Telecom Union (ITU) Telecom World 2019 opens in the Budapest, Hungary, the Nigerian delegation led by the Minister of Communications, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami, is set to explore growth opportunities for the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector which is already playing a transformative role in the Nigerian economy.
Also attending the Conference is a delegation from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) which include the Chairman of the Commission’s Board of Commissioners, Otunba Olabiyi Durojaiye, the Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Danbatta, and a member of the Board of Commissioners, Mr. Clem Baiye.
The ITU Telecom World is an annual event for governments, corporations and other enterprises focused on communication technology where “high-level debate, networking” and showcasing of innovations takes place. This year’s theme, “Innovation together: Connectivity that matters”, resonates with Item 4 of NCC’s 8-Point Agenda which focuses on the promotion of investment opportunities and ICT innovation.
The thematic focus thus presents another opportunity for the NCC team and the entire Nigerian delegation to engage in panel discussions, meetings and valuable interactions with global ICT industry players, thoughts leaders, co-regulators and other policymakers.
Such interactions will help the delegation to explore opportunities for increased foreign direct investment (FDI) into the telecom sector with a view to deepening the digital transformation agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari which aims to leverage telecom and ICT to facilitate economic growth and development in Nigeria.
The NCC has been a partner of ITU and a strategic participant at ITU conferences. The NCC is particularly renowned for showcasing Nigerian innovators at ITU Telecom World and for which the Commission has received several recognitions from ITU, a specialized agency of the United Nation’s that coordinates telecommunications operations and services throughout the world.
