Nigeria launches “Service-Wise GPT” to enhance public service efficiency through AI

Nigeria has officially launched “Service-Wise GPT,” an innovative AI-powered tool aimed at improving the efficiency of public services across the nation. This groundbreaking assistant was unveiled at the Global Government Summit and is designed to facilitate streamlined access to essential government information, automate the drafting of policies, and enhance administrative workflows.

Initial trials of “Service-Wise GPT” have shown promising results, with a reported 73% improvement in time efficiency for users and an impressive 90% satisfaction rate. Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, Nigeria’s Head of Civil Service, emphasized the transformative potential of this AI system, stating that it will revolutionize how government employees engage with public service regulations, statutory instruments, and operational guidelines. The tool aims to save time, boost compliance, and enhance decision-making across various ministries by providing real-time assistance in policy research.

The introduction of “Service-Wise GPT” is part of Nigeria’s broader technological ambitions, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which advocates for the increased integration of AI in governance. In 2024, the Nigerian government, in partnership with Google, launched a ₦100 million fund dedicated to supporting AI-powered startups, thereby accelerating innovation within Nigeria’s burgeoning tech ecosystem.

Nigeria’s commitment to AI adoption reflects a growing trend across the African continent. The African Union’s Continental AI Strategy emphasizes the importance of responsible AI development and regional collaboration. However, one of the significant challenges facing Nigeria’s public sector has been bureaucratic inefficiency, which has hindered effective service delivery. “Service-Wise GPT” aims to tackle this issue by automating routine administrative tasks, such as memo creation and policy analysis, thereby streamlining operations.

The Brookings Institution has underscored the necessity for African governments to establish AI policies that prioritize privacy, security, and transparency. Addressing these critical concerns will be essential as Nigeria advances its AI-driven transformation.

Nigeria’s embrace of AI extends beyond the civil service. In 2023, the government sought the expertise of Nigerian-born AI scientists to contribute to the development of the country’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy. This initiative, along with ongoing investments in AI startups and research, positions Nigeria as a pivotal player in Africa’s AI evolution.

With the launch of “Service-Wise GPT,” Nigeria is not only modernizing its public service but also laying the groundwork for AI adoption in other vital sectors. If successfully implemented, this initiative could serve as a model for other African nations aspiring to leverage AI for enhanced governance and improved service delivery.
