Nigeria Joins Digital Public Goods Alliance to Boost Open Digital Transformation

Nigeria has officially joined the Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA), a United Nations–endorsed global initiative that promotes the use of open-source technologies to accelerate digital transformation, improve lives, and advance sustainable economic growth.

Digital public goods (DPGs) are open and interoperable solutions — including software, data, AI systems, and content — that adhere to privacy and best practice standards while supporting progress toward the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

With this milestone, Nigeria joins a network of countries and organizations committed to fostering inclusive, transparent, and collaborative digital ecosystems.

“Nigeria’s membership of the Digital Public Goods Alliance reinforces our commitment to building an open, inclusive, and collaborative digital ecosystem that empowers our people and drives sustainable growth,” said Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy. “Through this partnership, Nigeria is not only participating in a global movement but also contributing homegrown solutions that reflect our leadership in shaping the future of digital transformation in Africa.”

Under its Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) Framework, Nigeria plans to integrate DPGs into public digital services, develop a national playbook to standardize adoption, and strengthen partnerships between the public and private sectors. The move will scale the use of open tools such as OpenCRVS (for civil registration), DHIS2 (for health information), and KoboToolbox (for data collection) across government agencies and states.

The government also intends to grow local capacity through initiatives like 3MTT and DevsInGovernment, which will help developers build and maintain digital public goods that meet global standards. Among the DPG nominations from Nigeria are homegrown innovations such as eHealth Nigeria (which uses OpenMRS to digitize health data), BudgIT (promoting budget transparency), and Citizens’ Gavel (expanding access to justice through technology).

“By embracing digital public goods in its policy processes and capacity building efforts, Nigeria is strengthening its own digital public infrastructure and service delivery in vital areas such as education and health, while also demonstrating global leadership in driving inclusive and sustainable digital transformation,” said Liv Marte Nordhaug, CEO of the Digital Public Goods Alliance Secretariat.

The announcement was made during the DPI Cooperation in Motion 50-in-5 Milestone Event, held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York City on September 22, 2025.

By joining the DPGA, Nigeria reaffirms its role as a leader in digital innovation and positions itself to share and adopt best practices that make digital transformation more inclusive, transparent, and globally connected.
